The 2013 Digicel KickStart Series culminates with the Digicel KickStart Academy, to be held in Barbados on Sunday November 10, where St. Lucia will be represented by three young, aspiring and talented footballers.
Anton Paul from Dennery, Ryi Maryat from Micoud, and Keeroy Lionel from Soufriere, started this rigorous but amazing football journey with Digicel in April, through a series of football pre-clinics being held in various communities across the island.
It was from these pre-clinics that 30 boys were chosen and put through a series of match-related drills where they were further assessed on their technical competence, mental and physical capability, team spirit, attitude, discipline level and response to instructions by Chelsea Foundation coaches. With an array of talent on display, Anton, Ryi and Keeroy emerged as the top three players and earned their spots to the Digicel KickStart Academy.
According to Digicel’s Country Manager Holly Hughes-McNamara, “The Digicel KickStart Academy is part of Digicel’s growing commitment in assisting the development of youth and sports in the Caribbean, providing a once in a lifetime opportunity for talented footballers to be coached by world-renowned Chelsea Football Club coaches.
“Digicel continues on its vow to support grassroots in St. Lucia, opening doors to new possibilities by finding innovative ways to bring out the extraordinary talent within the youth.”
According to Ryi Maryat, one of the three chosen youth footballers, “I am quite elated that I will be attending this academy in Barbados for the opportunity to improve on my football skills and to be drilled by Chelsea Football Club coaches. Thanks to Digicel I now have an exciting opportunity to become one step closer to fulfilling my dreams of being a professional football player.”
Digicel KickStart Series is an annual football programme held within Caribbean countries served by Digicel.
