For Vintage Basketball Dru Serieux scored 8 points in the half, supported by teammate Kernan Joseph with 6 points off 2 3-point field goals in the first quarter. It all seemed all too easy for the league veterans who were moving the ball really well and finding open cutters for easy points.
Then the nightmare of Tuesday came to haunt the veterans as well in Micoud, but this time Officer Callious Dantes was doing as much damage as his colleague, Erwin Tertullien. The two combined for 11 of the 23 third quarter points by the Police, and were responsible for catalyzing a 23-5 scoring run that put the Police right back in the game and then gave them the lead by the end of the quarter 40-35.
The Police team continued to maintain a 5+ point cushion on Vintage Basketball down to 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter. This frustrated the veterans who called for a time-out with less than 4 minutes remaining and the win almost out of their grasp, score 41-47.
It was then that the tides changed with Vintage Basketball now employing an aggressive half-court pressure defense to disrupt the Police offense and win the ball. The running clock, now an enemy of the trailing team needed to be stopped and quick fouls by Vintage, in penalty foul situation achieved that. The Police failed to score on a few of these free throw opportunities and Vintage steadily stayed close, converting on the other end. But with less than a minute to go and down by 4 points Vintage Basketball needed a miracle, and that miracle rightly emerged in the person of Omowale Jn Baptiste.
Frustrated after three quarters where the team sharp-shooter had only scored two points, and when the team needed him most, Omowale scored a 3-point field goal from the top of the arc, bringing his team within one, 48-49.
Immediately scrambling on the imbounds pass the Vintage team quickly fouled putting the Police back at the line again for two free throws with 12 seconds remaining. Still, the Police team missed on both these opportunities giving Vintage the ball off the rebound, and after a flurry of passes up the court the ball found its way back in Omowale’s hands with the game on the line. As if he had been hitting them all day, Omowale deftly swished the mid-range shot giving Vintage Basketball the lead with 4 seconds remaining. A disheartened Police team could hardly get the ball up the court and time expired with Vintage Basketball winning in dramatic fashion 50-49.
