PRESS RELEASE – Officers attached to the Major Crimes Unit of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of 25-year-old, Christopher Severin of Bruceville, Vieux Fort.

It is alleged that about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2014, officers attached to the Vieux Fort Police Station responded to a report of a suspected lunatic behaving aggressively at Bruceville.

On arrival, the officers observed Severin who was armed with a cutlass behaving in a disorderly manner. The officers made several attempts to disarm the individual but this proved futile.

He continued in his assault against the officers, who in turned fired a single gunshot in his direction, hitting him in the lower part of the body.

Christopher Severin was transported to the St. Jude’s Hospital where he was treated and admitted. About 11:20 p.m. on Monday, November 10, 2014, he succumbed to his injury whilst admitted at hospital.

The investigation into this fatal shooting continues.

  2. This is a very disturbing trend which appears to be recurring behavior on the part of the police. Something must be done to address this situation. The mentally disturbed in our midst should never to treated with such cruelty. The police officers in St.Lucia seem to enjoy killing such individuals, since it provides a convenient excuse to justify their reckless acts. Something has got to be done to curtail this type of unacceptable behavior.

    • Marlene,

You must have come on here, closed your eyes, then commented. Again, Police are NOT trained to shoot in the foot, hand, ears, pinky fingers, small toe, etc, etc. They are trained or taught to shoot CENTER MAST. Do you know what that means? It's means they are trained to shoot at the biggest or largest part of the body.

  5. This is so sad that it appears that the only means of restraing a mental PATIENT is to shoot him. I am sure police could have used a fishing net or some other way.

think that they have forgotten their role is also to protect the patient from uneccessary harm. Until it is not one of your own you wouldn't give a rats ass who got shot. Could the modus aparendi always be "mental patient armed with cutlass, lets SHOOT HIM."

Come on people we know better we are living in a civlized world in the year 2014 and we are saying we don't have tranquilizers, we can't use tasers because we don't have a law. Yet we called ourselves civilized, christian, independent and all sorts of other titles that we don't even understand.

I am sure if a politician or his family became a victim probably in a situation not even as grave as this one, people would be so sympathetic and aggessive towards the person responsible. It is the duty of the police to risk their life. If you don't understand that then people will always be shot for trivialities.

When are we going to stop and think that everyone is to do their job with due care and consideration. YOU KILLED A PATIENT.

Who is considered to be a lunatic?

    • A fishing net? Are you for real? It is clear you have no idea about how to handle the mentally ill. The ministry of health should take the lead on handling the mentally Ill. The police enforce the law and mental illness is a disease. The police should not be the first point of contact in 2014. Get real and do things the right way. Police officers have been killed and injured by the mentally ill. Where were you with your fishing net? Chops.

  8. The mother verbalised he had a history of mental illness. He was threatening his mother and sister and police had to use the necessary force to save life and property. Lucians need to stop making assumptions

  9. Idiots...there's no telling if a person will die or not...doesn't matter where u shoot...thus xotic p girl who got in the leg died...leg arm shoulder back doesn't matter....police saw a threat to the community...took the shot...I'm sure they didn't intend to kill the guy..they did aim for the lower part of his body...it's just unfortunate that he died...moving right along

  10. So sorry to hear that a family has lost a loved one. Why am I not surprised that no one even cared to comment and say something like that. Condolences goes out to the family on their loss. God is JUDGE people. If you were not there, stop making useless assumptions.

  11. They have bin bags rounds. Sometimes u need to use these first and live last. Some young cops are hard headed and refuse to use what is required. However if it is defence then it's ok
