UWP International Women’s Day statement

(PRESS RELEASE) – Every year on International Women’s Day, March 8th, we celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women globally.

The International Women’s Day theme for this year is #EachforEqual, an action for each and every individual to promote the advancement of gender equality. The United Workers Party National Women’s Arm wishes to honour and recognise the women of its party and the nation. Let’s do this together! Join us in celebrating our women!

UWP advocates for equality amongst us and to promote women’s right to participate equally in all spheres. Today more than ever, women occupy leadership and decision-making roles across various sectors. We are extremely grateful for their contributions and proud of the greater shift towards gender parity.

Let us examine and reflect upon our actions and feelings towards women. Are we doing enough to promote gender equality and create a more balanced society?

Our Leader and Prime Minister Honourable Allen Chastanet views the participation of women in politics as a priority for our party. This is why the UWP has been a flagship party in the way women are honored and recognized. Our women, hold some of the highest offices within the party structure which includes; Deputy Political Leader, Deputy Chairperson and General Secretary.

When UWP is in government, our women thrive, this is demonstrated by the notable achievements which include having the First Female Minister and the largest number of women in Cabinet, in the history of Saint Lucia. UWP believes that having a balanced cabinet with adequate female representation makes government, more transparent, inclusive and accessible.

UWP is inclusive without gender stereotypical barriers. Women who show an interest in joining the party and holding leadership positions will be judged solely on merit. Our mantra: “you are capable you are eligible”

Women have always been the flag bearers, the warriors and the soldiers of this party, today we are also the decisionmakers. Women continue to be at the forefront supporting the party and nation. We stand ready to serve! The UWP National Women’s Arm is here to engage with and support women at every level. We would like to thank all our supporters for their unwavering support and invite more women to get involved and to advocate for our party, cognizant, that your involvement can make a difference, and that you have an opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of our party and the direction of our country.

We would like to voice our concerns about the increasing levels of violence against women and girls, and the attitude of some, towards this behavior. As we mark International Women’s Day, let us stand strong, show compassion and promote a safer environment for our women and girls. Let’s work with our government to make our nation, better and safer.

We are proud of the work our government has done to date and we applaud the Prime Minister and all the Ministers of Government and their employees who provide great support to them. We agree, that there is still much to be done, so let us forge ahead, secure in the knowledge and firm conviction that we are working assiduously to make a difference in the lives of all Saint Lucians. Let us work together to Build a New Saint Lucia.
