STATEMENT – The United Workers Party (UWP) is encouraged by the SLP Government’s decision to accede to the persistent calls by public sector unions for the established negotiating framework for discussion of salaries and conditions of work to be activated.
Although the statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister announcing the decision bears some hint of Government’s willingness to restore the established procedure and convention for negotiations, the June 23rd Press Release reeks of the alarming arrogance which has characterized the attitude of Prime Minister Kenny Anthony throughout this botched process.
The UWP notes that in communicating his agreement to regularize the negotiations process through appointment of the Government Negotiating Team (GNT), Dr. Anthony has set conditions which may jeopardize opportunities for engagement. In the statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister dated June 23rd, 2014, the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance is quoted as stating that the agenda for negotiations within the GNT must be broadened “to allow for the negotiations of expenditure reduction”. The statement in question clearly states that the Government under the leadership of Dr. Anthony is prepared to activate the GNT “provided that we agree to the agenda indicated above”.
We wish to commend the membership and leaders of all public sector unions for their demonstrated determination to preserve the established negotiating framework despite threats and institutionalized psychological intimidation. The UWP encourages the membership and leaders of public sector unions to continue to represent their interest in an objective and professional manner free from political influence.
