PRESS RELEASE – The United Workers Party (UWP) would like to place on record its admiration for and commendation to members of the Jacmel Mini Bus Drivers Association for repairing sections of the Jacmel main road.
We are aware of persistent calls made by representatives of this Association, drawing attention to the deplorable conditions of the road in question. We note, as reported by the drivers, that their intervention was prompted by the inaction of the ministry responsible, notwithstanding a tour of affected areas with engineering staff of the ministry ahead of the 2014-2015 Budget.
The members of the Jacmel Minibus Association, through their recent action, clearly demonstrated their unwillingness to wait extended periods for government to fulfill its mandate and obligations to taxpayers.
The actions taken by the members of the Jacmel Minibus Association speak to a new paradigm in which citizens seem to feel compelled “to assume the responsibilities of government”, a sentiment which has taken root with the onset of a failed Labour government: a government that is becoming increasingly isolated from the reality of the people they were elected to serve; a government which appears not to understand the desperation, despair and destitute state of a growing number of Saint Lucians who are left to fend for themselves, in the absence of any motivational or inspirational leadership from the Dr. Kenny Anthony Administration.
So a “wè pou ko-w” mentality has emerged as citizens seek to respond to an insouciant (uncaring) government and the challenge to survive against the bite of “bitter days”. We once again commend the Jacmel Minibus Association and encourage them in their endeavours to safeguard their standard of living and livelihoods, and that of the residents of the wider Jacmel community.
