Secretary of United and Strong Inc Jessica St. Rose has said the decision taken by the US Supreme Court to allow same- sex marriage could help to open up a new tourism market in the Caribbean.
St. Rose said the decision could create opportunities for several Caribbean countries that are tourism-driven, including Saint Lucia, to look into creating a new market called “same-sex tourism.”
This she believes will encourage same-sex couples to visit the Caribbean to enjoy their honeymoons and family vacations.
St. Rose said Caribbean this will certainly help to bring in more revenue for Saint Lucia and the entire region.
She said the Caribbean should also move to make same-sex marriage legal, making it more appealing for same-sex couples to visit the Caribbean.
Same-sex marriages are now legal across the entirety of the United States after a historic supreme court ruling that declared attempts by conservative states to ban them unconstitutional.
In what may prove the most important civil rights case in a generation, five of the nine court justices determined that the right to marriage equality was enshrined under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.
The decision has however been met with mixed responses, particularly the religious communities.
