PRESS RELEASE – The Children’s Literacy Action Support (CLAS) has awarded the first two scholarships under the Loraine Jolie Scholarship Fund (LJSF)
The two recipients, Vern John and Jovanie Florent are both residents of Marchand Boulevard and were successful at the 2015 Common Entrance Exam. John attends the Vide Bouteille Secondary School and Florent, the Corinth Secondary School.
The two were selected based on their performance at the Common Entrance examinations and their socio-economic needs. The scholarships will cover transportation and meals for one year in the first instance, and upon successful review, will be renewed annually.
The Loraine Jolie Scholarship Fund is different from typical scholarship programs, in that it is geared solely towards children in inner city neighbourhoods, where there is a high drop-out rate among secondary school students. The objective of the LJSF is to ensure that the students who face challenging economic situations are enabled to complete their secondary school tenure.
John and Florent are already benefiting from their scholarships; and a formal handing over ceremony is planned for later this month.
The Loraine Jolie Fund was launched on October 3rd, 2015, in memory of late attorney at law Loraine Jolie.
