(TRINIDAD EXPRESS) — Effective Saturday all places of learning inclusive of schools and universities will remain closed for one week, in the first instance, in order to slow the potential spread of COVID-19.
Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley made the announcement while speaking in Parliament today (Friday 13 March, 2020)
Dr Rowley urged managers and business owners to implement realistic sick leave policies and to be flexible with workplace arrangements. He said people should be allowed to work from home where feasible and encouraged all to act on Public Health recommendations.
The Prime Minister said people should stay at home if genuinely suffering from a respiratory illness but noted that this is not a pass to skylark and evade their responsibilities. He said there should be a promotion of a workplace culture that supports people staying at home when genuinely sick.
The Prime Minister noted that the Government has advised a number of self-imposed cautionary measures that will slow down, delay and possibly prevent the spread of the virus.
He reiterated some of these measures urging the following:
Do not expose yourself unnecessarily through non-essential mass gathering.
Limit exposure to public places. Only travel if essential or it is an emergency.
Practice good personal hygiene habits such as more frequent washing of your hands, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, sneeze and cough into tissue and properly dispose of the tissue.
Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Be sensible about not exposing frail seniors or people with other health conditions to respiratory illness.
