(TRINIDAD EXPRESS) – A police officer with 28 years’ service appeared before Port of Spain Magistrate Nanette Ford- John on Tuesday on eight corruption charges.
Corporal Shiraz Ali, who was last attached to the Maracas Bay Police Station, is on four counts of corruptly receiving and four counts of corruptly soliciting sums totaling $46,000, to forego prosecuting four suspects accused of possession of firearms and ammunition.
The offences are alleged to have occurred over the period February 18 and March 1.
The officer was arrested during a sting operation carried out by the Professional Standards Bureau at Maracas Bay.
On Tuesday a relative of an accused made a report to the Professional Standards Bureau in which it was alleged the Ali, on separate occasions, corruptly solicited and received sums not to proffer charges against the four accused persons.
Magistrate Ford-John granted bail in the amount of $500,000 on the condition that Ali report to the Fraud Squad Mondays and Fridays between the hours of 7am and 7pm. The matter was postponed to April 3.
