(NEW YORK POST) – Handsome people need not apply.

While it may be physically beautiful, the Italian town of Piobbico has made a name for itself by celebrating its ugliest residents.

Since 1879, the central Italian enclave of roughly 2,000 people has been home to the Club dei Brutti (or The Ugly Club), an association whose members come together to appreciate inner beauty.

The group was originally intended as a way for single women in the town to meet potential husbands, according to the BBC. The association ultimately spawned the “World Association of Ugly People” which now counts 25 chapters around the world.

New members are evaluated before they are inducted and ranked along a scale ranging from “unspecified” to “extraordinarily ugly.”
