Today is World Heart Day

World Heart Day was founded in the year 2000 to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading causes of death claiming 17.3 million lives each year.

World Heart Day is observed annually on 29th September with the aim of spread the news that at least 80% of premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases could be avoided if four main risk factors are controlled namely , tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol.

Dr. Christiana Nathaniel, Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Victoria Hospital addressed the issues of the consumption of excess sugar and salts as part of our diets which contributes to heart disease.
