Thousands protest policies of Saint Lucia government, call for fresh elections

By CMC

(CMC) — Thousands of Saint Lucians took to the streets on Sunday to protest the policies of the Allen Chastanet government calling on him to call fresh general elections on the island.

The demonstration, which was organised by the main opposition St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) attracted a wide cross section of people, including members of the St. Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SMDA) that has served notice on Labour Minister, Stephenson King, of industrial action at St Jude Hospital (SJC), in keeping with the laws of the state relating to essential services.

In their September 6, 2018 letter, the association gave no date for the industrial action nor the form it will take, but they have complained about the working conditions at the SJC in the south of the island.

Demonstrators carrying various placards, including those calling on the government to re-open the state-owned Radio St. Lucia that was closed because of financial problems, chanted songs calling for the ruling United Workers Party (UWP)  that won the June 6, 2016 general election “to go”.

Opposition and SLP leader, Phillip Pierre said he was pleased with the turnout, describing it as probably the biggest ever demonstration held in St. Lucia.

“The government will understand that there are thousands of people who disagree with what they are doing and they are ready to demonstrate on the ground with their feet,” Pierre said, saying that the protest was a genuine march for improving the health institutions in the country.

“Thank you for showing up in such large numbers. Thank you to all St. Lucians…who joined us today in this battle for our country. I want to tell you, you are the ones who will determine how long Allen Chastanet stays in office,” Pierre said, noting that the government has not been carrying out its duties in regard to the SJC that was first destroyed by fire in 1990.

“We are gathered here because we are not happy with the way the government is running this country,” said Dr. Keith Mondesir, a former health minister here.

Former prime minister Dr. Kenny Anthony, said while his administration was moved from office “by the collective will of the people of St. Lucia….there is a government who can no longer manage the affairs of this country.

“There is a government we can no longer trust. There is a government that has breached the faith, the hopes, the dreams, we invested in them. There is a government that has brought dishonour, despair, sadness (and) destroy the things that we hold dear in this country.

“We have crossed the threshold …we can by our collective will, hand in hand, holding each other remove Allen Chastanet and his cabinet from the levers of power in this country,’ said Anthony, who led the SLp into the last general election.

Other opposition politicians also expressed satisfaction with the march, with Therold Prudent, whose Lucian Peoples Movement (LPM) failed to win any seat in the last general election, saying he was “ ‘ecstatic’ about the protest.

“I believe it is sending a very strong message to this government that the time is very very short and that we are determined that this government must go and none of the nonsense in terms of privatisation of health, in terms of corruption, in terms of lack of accountability – all of these things we will throw them out, together with them when the time is right,” Prudent said.

  2. St Lucia better be careful....with all the criticisms of the ruling govt, whether rightly or wrongly, the fact is that they were elected by the people of St Lucia and with a significant majority. If the people are sufficiently dissatisfied with their performance and the SLP positions itself as a viable alternative then come next General Election, the people will ultimately decide. It is the people, not the SLP that must decide.

That is what democracy is about.

The precedent that the SLP is trying to set can and will come back to haunt them if and when they form the next govt. The constitution requires that a govt is elected, by the people, every 5 years and any attempt to subvert the constitution because you do not like the policies or the personalities, of the existing govt, will likely result in civil unrest and further divide the country along the lines of Red & Yellow. This hunger for political power has been the bane of a number of our sister Caribbean nations. Many other Caribbean nations have a violent history of this and the results were not pretty. Take heed St. Lucia, our island is too small and we may not recover from this divide.!!

We are a nation of hate. We ran to the liars, deceitful ,money hungry Politician and some people backing them for gain who cannot wait they turn. We say we are a bless nation but we don’t do that for god. The word of the lord says in Chronicles 7:14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. That is the solution for our problem. Not the the Political Ministers who spread hate. Stop using god for you’ll agenda because you’ll don’t follow his word. playing his songs and reading scripture and inciting hate. Go and pray. You’ll are not our answer.

  6. March on IDIOTS.. when's the next one? i am disgusted by both political parties and i believe we need a major overhaul.. ya'll wanna march on the anniversary of the st jude hospital fire but ya'll stayed in power for 5 years and couldnt patch up a burnt hospital.. the NOK of the people who perished have not been compensated.. 5+4=9.. five years labour and 4 years flambeau.. st just is at a standstill now cuz of god knows what.. how long do we have to wait again? UWP favors building horse cages instead of a proper medical facility for the people.. people have to go to a depleting stadium for medical care and be walking with one eye looking to the roof and the other at the road because of fears that a piece of steel might break off and fall on their head.. i am more so disgusted at the staff of St. Jude Hospital for standing for that kind of shit.. why has there not been a strike? essential service my ass.. if it was so essential priority would have been given to fixing st jude... i can go on about all this shit but y? stupse

    • I agree with you about one thing, the more SLP keeps St. Jude's in the limelight the more damning and attentive we can be to how they got us into this situation and how SLP is not good for the public purse. Rochamel, Grynberg, St. Jude's; Kenny likes having money, look at the big vehicles he drives compared to Michael Chastanet. You don't want a man like that spending your money but the damage has already been done.

  8. Only in St. Lucia do people protest when jobs are flowing, projects are being completed without money being wasted and crime is low.

But then since the SLP would have been doing the opposite of all these thing I can see why they are opposed.

    • Do you live in an alternate reality?

      (16)(13)
      • No. You just can't grasp reality. You can't see the difference in the crime rate under the different administrations. The improvements to our relationship with Western allies. You forget Kenny Anthony was getting chummy with Venezuela? Look at the state of their country now. All of the people that used to be working under Kenny Anthony have left him. Where is Mario Mitchel? Where is Menissa Rambally? Where is the team of educated people that would run the country properly? You wouldn't have confidence in a boss whose own subordinates abandoned him because he thought he was the only one with all the ideas but here you are supporting the Labour Party.

        (21)(6)
  9. Why the protest? you got what you ask for didn't you???

  10. The rats, cockroaches and litches do not want to work but must have their way in running the country no matter what the situation pass it or we eat you out. The government must keep doing as they want feed us or u die. What kind of a people residing in our country Now. Lucian's we do not need communism to survive get up and get stop this here is a fish learn to fish.

  11. Even if elections were called next month, the people would still put the UWP back in office. No matter how loudly , Hillaire, Pip, Frederick and the others bray, they simply can't replace the UWP. The UWP is doing what is right for the country.

  12. Health care in St Lucia even in the best of times were not so great but things have gotten worst these days and that's just the truth

    (25)(12)
  13. Therold Prudent is just a useless $hit disturber. He's won nothing, but takes every opportunity to stick his face in the camera to advance his novice agenda. Nobody vote for you, why you still here wasting our time. You not even from here no more. Take you a$$ back to nu york.

  14. Lucians need to petition for France to take over St.Lucia...none of these guys in government care about our well-being

  15. Yesterday’s match was primarily one to advance the political ambitions of a few by using the masses. The SLP has ensured that key operatives are implanted in strategic positions. Most glaring is the CSA. The SLP continues to use public officers for their political gains. The Head of CSA we can tell from the way he speaks is not very bright but he is very organized in the manner in which he can get people to cause destruction.
When these guys get into power public officers are treated with the same disdain as usual. No salary increases. They bring in their people from outside to stunt the growth of public officers by making bold claims that there are no leaders in the public service. The Ernest Hilarie we have known over the years has been always hungry for power. And how dear you’ll in the last election he came this close to getting into power and you’ll didn’t give it to him. Do you’ll remember a few years ago when they won the election and at a carnival show they bulldozed him off the pack? King was seated in front of them because he had to come with his now wife who was head chaperone at the time. Those who were in power and didn’t know how to handle it got King thrown out by SSU. This was done after the themselves had thrown a few punches. The reason being that King was in no position to sit in front of them since they were Government ministers. They were the ones in power.
Do you recall the beating that one of the speakers on the platform last night and his brother gave to a guy in Soufriere because the man was wearing a UWP t-shirt? Nothing happened for this.
Pierre keeps dividing the country and pretends to be very innocent in the process. He is a deceitful man. Kenny the wicked keeps lighting fires. It is the same labour people. They are trying to damage our country for their political gain.
People we must let the SLP know this is a democracy and that elections is every five years. They cannot bulldoze their way through.
I was so disgusted and ashamed to hear Prudent. May and Richard are very pathetic. These are obviously people who did not get the personal gain they intended to get. Ask Mary what she wanted. Didn’t Kenny say Richard was the worst thing to happen to St. Lucian politics? (SMH)
This so-called National Match was one to advance the ambitions of a few political bandits.
