“There is something greater than what we are being told” – Prudent on Juffali affair

Government’s response to the issue involving its recently-known Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Dr. Sheik Walid Juffali has raised many eyebrows.

But Political Leader of the Lucian People Movement (LPM) Therold Prudent believes that there is more to the issue, which the Kenny Anthony administration is not saying to the people of Saint Lucia.

“There is something greater than what we are being told,” Prudent told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) on Tuesday (Jan.19) in an exclusive interview regarding the Juffali affair.

Prudent said he believes that every Saint Lucian should be concerned about the actions of the government and Dr. Kenny Anthony, with regards to Dr. Juffali’s immunity and performance.

The government said on Monday that they intend to uphold the principle of diplomatic immunity by allowing Dr. Juffali to invoke his diplomatic immunity in the civil case brought by his ex-wife.

This comes a week after the British government had requested that the Saint Lucia government waive Dr. Juffali’s immunity to proceed with the legal matter involving his ex-wife.

The LPM leader asserted that the Government of Saint Lucia has not been transparent from the inception and it gives enough space for suspicions and for persons to start demanding answers.

Prudent recalled that nothing was known about Dr. Juffali, until the British tabloids began publishing stories that the government here was at the helm of one of the biggest divorce cases in England.

“This tells us now that since our government is refusing to waive his immunity and accede to the request of the British government that there is something more to it,” he added.

Saint Lucians, he said, should stop to ask, “What is it in the Juffali deal that makes government feel that it’s at peril to be able to remove the immunity of Dr. Juffali?”

Prudent said: You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you are blocking or preventing the courts in England to move ahead in divorce proceedings, simply because you wish to become a stumbling block for a man who knows nothing about our country and a man who we don’t know what deal you made with him, and why immunity was given.”

The LPM leader maintains that the Juffali affair raises a lot of frightening questions.

“Why such a small country such as Saint Lucia would go on a limb to ensure that Dr. Juffali is not stripped of his immunity and denying his wife the opportunity to challenge him in court?”

He said this also sends a “very strong message” to women in Saint Lucia, that government would allegedly do anything to deny women their rights in court.

“If you have a government that will do anything to protect a man and ensure that his wife of over 20 years does not have the ability to challenge him in court, then what does it tell you about our women here in Saint Lucia. They have to look at it from that point of view,” he stressed.

But more importantly, Prudent said besides the divorce issue, Dr. Juffali has not proven to be someone who has Saint Lucia’s interest at heart, because he has never attended an IMO meeting.

“Not representing Saint Lucia says a lot. It means that this guy does not care about Saint Lucia. It tells me that the government is more concerned about aspects of whatever alleged secret deals they may have with Juffali.”

Prudent said the interest of Saint Lucia is more important than the interest of the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) or any political organisation here in St. Lucia and this should be taken into consideration.

  1. There are very few things that impede your intellectual and personal development and your attainment of wisdom more than bias, prejudice and hypocrisy.
As a result slave owners could never agree to end slavery until they were forced to.
In too many parts of Europe white people still throw bananas at black footballers.
Up to the 1960's African Americans were blatantly denied access to "whites only" facilities and institutions.
Your children are always "right" no matter what "wrongs" they may have done.
Too many St. Lucians swear by their political affiliations and not only do they turn a blind eye towards the errors of their party but go as far as sounding absolutely stupid and ridiculous just to defend actions that are indefensible.
Slavery survived for 300 years in the Caribbean because of bias and hypocrisy. There are many evils other than slavery that continue to exist because of bias and hypocrisy.
Stop making excuses when things are wrong!!

  2. In a divorce if both parties agree to the conditions of the divorce then there is no problem. However, if the two parties cannot agree it's up to the courts to decide how their assets can be shared. Neither party can force their intention on the other.

The courts are there for the attainment of justice. To deny Mr. Juffali's estranged wife her usual right to seek justice from the courts is a travesty. The courts do not have to agree with what she asks but she will be content to know that she got a chance to make her case.

And what's wrong with that? If Juffali is afraid to lose his millions then let him try to defend it in Court. He can afford good lawyers.
By the way, just for those who do not know a billion is 1000 million. It looks like this 1,000,000,000.
Mr Juffali is supposed to be worth 4 times that amount i.e. 4,000,000,000.

If Mr Juffali had to give his wife 1 million every year it would take him at least 4000 years before he would run out of money.

  3. I am a red supporter. Has been all my life. Initially I buried my head when a few things just did not sit right.

There is no way I was going to give those Flambos any stick to beat my party. No way. As the Jaffali story continued a few things I could not explain when challenged. In fact more than a few. As a SLP supporter my friends keep asking me to explain a few simple things.

First, why was this wonderful appointment kept from the St. Lucia public. Why did we St. Lucians have to find out via an article in the British Press. Why was the former St. Lucia High Commissioner to Britain Ernest defending the appointment.

Why not the Minister For External Affairs Baptiste. Why has he not said a single word on the topic ? Why did Huntley say that Jaffali had no diplomatic immunity which I repeated. Only to find out he does have diplomatic immunity.

Why was Williams made his assistant at the IMO. Was there a connection between Jaffali and Williams? Why has this man not invested in our infrastructure so far. Why why why. Some thing tells me that Kenny and Hillarie are hiding under the red flag. It bothers me big time.

  4. I was wondering when someone would have hit the nail on the head. I was hoping it would have been a woman!! And was waiting for Ms Mary Francis or some other woman who is a "Human Rights Activist" to join the discussion.
Mr. Prudent might have been waiting also and got tired and felt compelled to wait no further!
I thought maybe because it's not a St.Lucian woman, nobody would have mentioned "this oppressive act" against a woman.

    (12)(1)

    • Clarifier imagine the women who supports this, continuously call the woman a gold digger.

I wonder if it were them and they were accustomed to the high life, whether they would have bowed out gracefully? Whether they felt that while they did not contribute significantly financially, that they invested their time , their emotions and provided a stable home, that it meant that they deserved more.

I challenge any of the women who are calling the woman a gold digger whether they would have been ok, with what he dished out. Whether the hurt they felt because of marriage to a younger woman would have been diminished because some dollars were dangled in front of them.

I shake my head because while we must be careful that we do not oppose because of opposing sake because let's face it, we don't know all the facts, some of us have failed to acknowledged that there is another "woman' involved in this saga too.

I don't think most people realise the bigger issue there. I think we are so blinded by party colors that we fail to realise that another woman was probably used.
That other woman was Helen, Helen of the West Indies. And that woman could have been used to set a dangerous precedent.

  5. Kenny & co will laugh until this election come- why? they were able to fool us in believing that what they did was right. soon enough Dr. Juffali will speak. Men of his character have no friends.

  6. There is a politician whose ENTRY into politics was described as frightening by Dr. Anthony. Now we are seeing that Dr. Anthony's STAY in politics can equally be described as frightening

  7. Mr Prudent is what I would describe as Met Chu Kenny on this Juffalli matter. On every turn he dis in them. LOL
Last light on Choice he had them in a carken on Taiwan. It just goes to show how much of a papishow Kenny turning St Lucia into.

  8. The Labour party has already bought all the SLP hacks around Christmas time with a little ham and a cheap bottle of rum, so they can beat their empty drums which makes more noise. Saint Lucians must make a better choice come election time. A word to the wise is enough.

  9. Prudent is the most anti St Lucia individual I know I know in public life. I remember a couple years ago how enraged he was when St Lucia and Venezuela signed an oil deal from which St Lucia was to benefit by getting cheap oil from Venezuela. The only thing this man did not do was force a speedy second coming of the Lord. His position: Venezuela was in no position to give St Lucia any kind of economic assistance. He went as far as to say the Venezuelan economy could not afford the hand out. He was of the view that rather than foster friendship with Venezuela we strengthen our ties with the USA and the UK.

If Mr Prudent was thinking straight he would realise St Lucia has no influence on the scope and direction of its relationship with the USA and the UK. These countries have the tendency to see you as vessels to be used in ways beneficial to them with little regard to how you are affected. Take for instance Puerto Rico a prized USA out-post in the Caribbean. Is the US showing any deep interest in that country? If so why is it almost bankrupted?

What exposes Mr Prudence even more lethal is the way comes out as a very irresponsible propagandist. He method is suggestive because he conveys no information in actual fact. All he did was to lead you in a certain direction and have you to view the government and its position in relation to the Juffali affair negatively. The government maintains its position. It has placed its cards on the table: explain the situation; state its position and give the reasons for its position. These are the points of attack. In relation to these three areas show how the government is falling short. If you are unable to this then do nothing. Being this this divisive is not an option!
I urge you to read the article entitled: Oscars boss promises "big changes" after row over lack of black stars. You will find it in the final edition of today's edition of the evening Standard on page 22. 10. I too, smell a rat! How can someone who has done sweet nothing for the island place it in jeopardy for future and continued benefits. The red spin miesters are churning pure crap concerning the array of UK's responses. Many of the favorable policies can be ended until St. Lucia come to its senses. The UK is not obligated to give St. Lucia anything for free. The UK government will hold "frank talks" and that never bodes well for poorer countries. A St. Lucian or some St. Lucians may have to return their illegal gains.

  11. Mr Prudent,  may I ask you a question about the most recent CIP article posted 18 Jan '16 stating who the 'licenced marketing agents' are, the article states the marketing agents will be targeting the Middle East, North Africa, Far East and Asia.  Are these the only areas the CIP is being promoted in?
Has this got anything to do with Juffali and/or his daughters recent appointments?

    (14)(0)

    • Mr Prudent
I have another question (and I know you did not create this messy situation)
but my question also relates to the CIP press release I mentioned above.

In the  photo accompanying the press release there are three different 'types' of passports displayed   -

      Official Passport
      regular Passport
      Diplomatic Passport

Could this indicate that all of the above 'up for grabs' with varying price tags?

This is very worring as we do not know who these people are carrying any of the above St Lucia passports, especially when certain types of passports carry certain privileges.

  12. LOIK BAMBI, YOU PARTY HACKS ARE ALWAYS ASKING PEOPLE TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES. EDUCATION ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH AS IS CURRENTLY VISIBLE IN THIS GOVERNMENT. WE HAVE A BUNCH OF FOOLISH EDUCATED PEOPLE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY RIGHT NOW.

MOST OF THEM HAVE FAILED TO LIVE UP TO THEIR POTENTIAL IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD WHERE ALLEGED CHEATING AND CORRUPTION IS MORE CURTAILED. THEY ENTERED POLITICS TO MAKE UP AND THEY ARE ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR ALLEGED PERSONAL BEST INTEREST FORGETTING THE ONES WHO VOTED FOR THEM AND EXPECTED BETTER.

NOW THAT THEY NEED THOSE PEOPLE AGAIN THEY REVERT TO THEIR OLD GAMES SHOWING UP UNEXPECTEDLY IN PLACES THEY HAVEN'T BEEN FOR YEARS, DRIVING WITH THEIR WINDOWS DOWN, PRETENDING TO CARE. WISDOM AND GOOD JUDGEMENT DEMANDS THAT GOVERNMENT ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE REPRESENT THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PEOPLE WHILST ALSO PAYING ATTENTION TO TGE WISHES OF THE PEOPLE.

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT MOST SAINT LUCIANS DO NOT DESIRE TO HAVE JUFFALI AS OUR AMBASSADOR. THE KENNY ANTHONY ADMINISTRATION HAS FAILED TO CONVINCE US THAT THEIR DECISION TO KEEP HIM IN WHAT THEY PORTRAY AS A JUSTIFIED BATTLE WITH THE BRITISH IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF OUR COUNTRY.

ENGLAND HAS BEEN A LONGSTANDING TRADING PARTNER AND IS STILL A FORMIDABLE FORCE ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE. MANY SAINT LUCIANS HAVE MADE A LIVING AND ARE STILL DOING SO IN ENGLAND. ENGLAND IS OUR MOTHER COUNTRY AND IN SPITE OF THE CHALLENGES WE'RE HAD WITH THEM WE SHOULD NOT DISMISS THEM OR EMBARRASS THEM FOR THE SAKE OF A JOHNNY COME LATELY.

WHEN JUFFALI GOES ON HIS BUSINESS WE WILL STILL HAVE TO CONTEND WITH THE REPERCUSSIONS OF KENNY'S ACTIONS. IS THIS HIS EDUCATION SPEAKING OR IS THIS JUST FOOLISHNESS. MAKE NO MISTAKE THIS IS VERY EMBARRASSING TO THE BRITISH. TGIS IS LIKE A CHILD SPITTING ON HER MOTHER BECAUSE SHE HAS MET GONE TO BED WITH A CHEAP WEALTHY MAN WHO WILL NOT SPEND A DIME ON HER.

CLEARLY THIS IS FOOLISHNESS. IT IS EVEN WORST WHEN EDUCATED PEOPLE DO FOOLISH THINGS. SO BAMBI PLEASE ASK KENNY TO GET SOME WISDOM FROM THE MOST HIGH WHO IS,WILLING TO GIVE IT TO THOSE WHO ASK.

  13. prudent stop spreading foolishness.
    what is there to hide?
what you and your flambo friends don't want to see in your backyard is what you will find in your bedroom.
S L P will be victorious come next election.
put that in your every day meal.
as 4 you Prudent YOU will runaway after the election.

    (6)(40)

    • He sis not give up the last rime is this time he will give up? Choops. We need men like Prudent who are prepared to fight in the trenches. Not too many people can show that level of commitment.

      (25)(0)

    • Flambeau will out the fire in your balls after elections. You should be very much afraid of what is happening in our Country under Kenny's watch, unless you know what we don't know, or you a just a blind party hack.

If Kenny looses the elections and all our friendly countries turn their backs on us, he will be laughing at us, because he probably have enough other countries waiting for him with open arms, with all his accumulated pensions, whilst you and I will be left in St. Lucia catching our ass

      (52)(0)

  14. I agree with Prudent.
I just find it extremely hard to believe that a man who is said to love St.Lucia, a man who has billionaire status , a man who is supposedly well connected in business circles and can attract investments, a man who by his sheer influence can supposedly be a plus for little third world Helen of the West was NEVER mentioned to the public by the government.
Every blinking pot hole or road fixed is posted on social media , but this one apparently was not fit to be mentioned? Why?????.
Is it because we as a nation is accustomed to attracting billionaires to our shores and this "norm" was not worthy of mention?????
Red and Yellow Lucians and those in between have their own take on the matter.
The SLU government is to be blamed for allowing assumptions to be made and rightly so it should be because of the lack of info.
Whether or not the SLU government was correct in not lifting his immunity is not the real issue. This issue of lifting his immunity is a product of something bigger in my books. It appears to be a by product of something bigger.
    Again the questions remain:
    - what attracted Juffali to St.Lucia?????
    - was he approached because of his business connections or did he or his reps approach us?????
    - was third world St.Lucia used for this man's personal gain????? Wasn't he made a diplomat AFTER wife was upset about his new marriage?????
    - are we setting a dangerous precedent?????
-with CIP in full effect has that eroded Lucians' confidence in how due dilligence will be carried out on prospective "citizens?????" What am I talking about????? Majority of ppl I have come across do not support it, so what confidence am I talking about?

I strongly believe that something is amiss. I strongly believe that we are not being told of certain things.
But can I expect any response????. No, because who are we as compared to a Saudi billionaire, whose sting might be bigger.
Some of us just rant and rave on social media. Some of us are permanents hacks who are blinded by all the hackery going that reasonable and objective thinking have eluded us.

    Lord help us.

    (122)(1)

  15. Party hacks only care about their pockets St Lucian's have to wake up an realise that this is a very serious matter Kenny has allegedly sold our St Lucia ... tomorrow no matter who is in power our children will not have the freedom we have...we need answers what is Kenny hiding?

    (82)(2)

  16. Bambi stop typing bullshit ! Law my a! Apart from law there is a dirty stinking rat and apparently the labour party hacks nose block?

    (78)(18)

  17. To the high heavens this entire thing stinks. How can a hired hand be allowed to destroy our country's diplomatic relations with a key trading partner? Why is there not even one single member of the SLP who has a restraining voice, or who can even opine even one word of caution?

Is the SLP a tribe of just yes-men? Are there men in that party who can think for themselves? Do they have any type of gonads, to give an objective opinion?

Are there only stooges and eunuchs, from top to bottom and within the rank and file, that makes up this so-called party? Does it only exist as a self-serving cabal?

Can such people be ever AGAIN be given a chance or a role in determining the complex future of this country? Ever?

    (235)(4)

    • sadly, I thought I would hear Alvina, she should be crying that crimes, of course denial of justice is a crime, against women should be stopped and we should all come to make sure it stops(in her voice) . But this crime against a woman we not hearing her voice at all, neither Emma. what a shame. Moreso, we do have lawyers in the coop who can weigh in, and of course, most of them know that it would be fair to lift immuniy. this is a family matter, let the matter be deat with. A husband prevents his wife from holding him acccountable, far less what he will do to st.lucia if we try to hold him accountable. Accountabe for what? Perhaps to hold up his bargain with the research centre. we may never see it go up. the LP fellas singing for their supper right now

      (3)(0)

  18. Educate yourself in international law and diplomatic relations and you will better understand what is going on. There is nothing to hide .The information is there .Some of you want to play political football with it but that will not work. Most of us can see through that.Nonsense!

    (6)(83)

    • I agree with Mr. Prudent. And by the way hiw dare you ask a man who holds a degree in international law to educate himself about thr very thing he went to school for. I suspect what Mr Prudent is saying is greater than just simply the government's refusal to strip the man of his immunity.
