Teenager charged for robbery of tourists; 2 others to be charged soon

Police have formally charged a teenager in connection with the robbery of tourists at Soufriere Diamond Falls last week, and indications are that two others will be charged shortly.

Don Lucien, 19, of Palmiste, Soufriere, was charged with robbery on Tuesday, April 16, the same day he appeared in the Second District Court. He was remanded until Monday, April 22, 2013 when he is scheduled to re-appear in court.

“Additional charges are expected to be laid against him at a later date. Two other individuals are expected to be charged shortly,” police said in a statement.

In an earlier press statement, police said Lucien confessed to the crime in a written statement to police, and that US currency, believed to be proceeds of the robbery, was recovered from the man.

Police said two other individuals suspected of being involved in the robbery are now in custody.

According to reports, on Friday, April 12, 2013 at about 12:45 pm, officers attached to the Soufriere Police Station responded to a robbery incident which occurred at the Soufriere Diamond Falls.

It was confirmed that four masked men, armed with homemade shot guns and pistols, entered the said premises and robbed a number of persons who were on the compound at the time. Those persons were visitors to the island aboard the cruise ship Celebrity Eclipse, which was berthed at the Castries Harbour.

“The men systematically searched the guest as well as their belongings. The masked men robbed them of monies, jeweleries, cameras, and cell phones and escaped in the bushes behind Diamond Waterfalls,” police said.

“In total, 60 passengers of the said cruise ship were on tour at the Soufriere Botanical Gardens. Thirteen passengers were robbed as well as three local tour guides who were accompanying them. Apart from the trauma of the incident, none of the persons robbed were injured,” police added.
