Lebright Mondesir, 21, was remanded into custody until sentencing despite objection from his lawyer who argued that he was previously on bail and reliable in court attendance.
However, Magistrate Charon Gardner said she was not convinced that $10,000 bail was sufficient to ensure Mondesir’s attendance in court for sentencing. She further stated that if she was to entertain bail, it would be in the region of $60,000 on each count.
Mondesir was charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug, one count of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply another, and possession of a controlled drug with intent to export.
Mondesir, who did not testify in the case, was found guilty on all three counts.
Prosecutors say that on July 26, 2011, at about 10:48 p.m., Mondesir’s checked bag aroused suspicion and was pulled from the loading dock. He was then paged and escorted to a room where he was asked to identify his bag which was then opened in his presence.
Officers discovered 20 sealed packages, one closed perfume bottle and one opened perfume bottle. The packages were opened and officers discovered a quantity of plant material, subsequently identified as cannabis.
The cannabis, which weighed 38.39 pounds, has an approximate street value of EC$23,000.
