Saint Lucia may not have endured against St Vincent and the Grenadines in the 2015 Windward Islands Men’s Football Championships. The Vincy Heat may have done better in World Cup Qualifying. But at least we still have the Caribbean Cup.
Both teams have won the Cup, and last year, SVG were beaten finalists. But none of that came into play when the two met on Sunday in New York City.
Team Saint Lucia beat Team SVG 8-0 this past weekend, before the tournament’s largest crowd to date. It was the biggest defeat for the boys from St Vincent and the Grenadines in the 24-year history of New York Caribbean Cup Soccer. And quite possibly Saint Lucia’s biggest win.
SVG were unable to field a full team for matchday 7, thanks to commitments elsewhere. Nonetheless, they held on for much of the half, with all eight behind the ball. Until, that is, Carlton Daniel hit in the 39th minute.
As the second stanza got underway, Kersan Marcellin took a cross from John Perry Joseph to double his team’s advantage. Three minutes later, Marcellin netted again.
In the 67th minute, John Perry Joseph made it 4-0 on a header inside the six yard box. Bradley Nestor two goals, Daran Fedee got one and John Perry Joseph got a second for the final score, Team Saint Lucia 8-0 Team St Vincent & the Grenadines.
Meanwhile, Team St Kitts and Nevis beat Team Guyana 2-0.
Next weekend, Team Antigua and Barbuda plays Team Dominica, followed by a matchup between Team Jamaica and Team Panama.
