(BBC) — It’s a sad record to hold – but today marks the highest increase in global coronavirus cases reported since the pandemic began, according to the World Health Organization.

In its latest situation report, the WHO said the total number of confirmed cases around the world had risen by 230,370 in the past 24 hours.

That’s up from the previous record of 228,102 daily cases on Friday.

The biggest jumps were from the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa.

Deaths remained steady at about 5,000 a day.
