Gervan ‘Subance’ Janvier from Grand Ravine, Dennery was announced the winner of the 2014 Piton Soca Starz shortly after midnight at Fond D’or Heritage Park, Dennery.
Janvier, who is a national football representative, tallied 649 points to take home the title and over $10,000 in cash and prizes, plus a recording contract.
He narrowly defeated Siah the Future Kid from Roseau by four points. Mighty from Grand Ravine, Dennery copped the second runner-up position with 617 points.
Ricardo from Cacoa, Babonneau was the fan favourite with 132 votes.
A total of 12 persons competed in the final.
The other finalists were: Blick Production (Micoud), Pretty B (Deriseaux), General Bakes (Micoud), Merle (Micoud), Pretti (Rodney Heights, Gros Islet), Teabag (Pavee, Castries), T-Nack (Grande Riviere, Dennery), and DRC (Dennery)).
Piton Soca Starz is a national performance competition in the soca genre. Over the last few years, the televised event has become a major part of activities for carnival.
Large crowds have been following and enjoying the island-wide search during the preliminary rounds each year.
This year’s six preliminary rounds were followed by two semi-finals – the first during Piton Party In De yard at Sans Souci, Castries on Friday, June 13 and the second at the WLBL car park in Vieux Fort on Saturday, June 14.
From the semi-final, a panel of judges chose 12 performers for Sunday’s finals (June 29).
In 2010, Piton Soca Starz crowned its first king Mongstar, who went on to become a national and regional soca star. In 2011, Sergia, the first female, won the event followed by J Budz in 2012 and Soca Bandit in 2013. The event has also given rise to artistes like Ambi, General Bakes and Soca Psycho, among others.
