Literature studies are highly marketable career areas and so students who are interested in this artistic pursuits should embrace it. So says Chair of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS). Dr. Michael Bucknor .

Dr. Bucknor is on island for the 16th triennial Conference of the Commonwealth Literary Association and is also a Lecturer in Literatures in English: Faculty of Humanities and Education, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus , Jamaica.

“Recently there have been studies that show that the type of graduate people want from universities is an arts graduate. The persons who do the subjects like literature because from that they get critical thinking skills, they are able to think outside of the box, they have creative energies, there are ways they can handle themselves. They are great communicators and this is central.”

Dr. Bucknor says qualified people are in high demand for employment in artistic fields and writing not necessarily in spite of the technological age but because of it.

“ The 21st century man and woman must be able to handle him or herself well and that literature is one of the things we would invite young people to embrace.”
