A Forestiere man, who told a magistrate yesterday that he had no choice to steal some yam because he was unemployed, was fined $400.
Matthew Jn Marie of Forestiere, Quarter in Castries pleaded guilty to praedial larceny, and has to pay the fine by December 7, 2012.
According to the prosecution, Jn Marie was caught red-handed digging up white yam valued at $70 on Sept. 7, 2012.
Jn Marie, who did not have legal representation, said he was aware that the act was wrong and criminal, but felt he had no choice because he was unemployed.
Jn Marie told the court he prefers to pay for the debt now that he has a job.
In handing down the sentence, Magistrate Michelle Louis said it was good that Jn Marie had immediately accepted his fault and showed genuine remorse for his actions as well as a willingness to pay.
