PRESS RELEASE – The Saint Lucia Swim Team represented remarkably at the CARIFTA Games which was held in Aruba this year.

The team comprised of Thalia Bergasse, Bailey Spiegelbert, Katelin Samuel, Eden Crick, Jyasi Daniel, Christopher Phillips, Anthony Francois, Ethan Dyke-Elliot, Jayan Odlum-Smith and Terrel Monplaisir.

There were five swimmers in the 11-12 category (three boys and two girls) and compared with other OECS islands, we are one of three OECS islands swimmers to score points in that age group.

Similarly, our swimmers significantly dropped times in all events and in fact raised their standard to AAA times which is up from the AA that they went into the meet with.

The two male swimmers in the 13-14 age group, Jyasi Daniel and Christopher Phillips did not score points however, dropped times in their events. By comparison, only three OECS islands scored points from their swimmers in this age group.

In the 15-17 age group, our female Youth Olympic Games candidate, Thalia Bergasse, who is coming off an injury, improved her performance and was the only one of two OECS female swimmers to score in that age group.

“The team’s result is not what was hoped for in general yet SLASA is optimistic that the preparations for Common Wealth Youth Games in 2017 is well underway and showing promise as displayed by the 11-12 age group swimmers who will be eligible to participate when Saint Lucia hosts this meet. Plans are being finalized to incorporate these swimmers into a national programme in addition to their respective regular Club programmes that should assist the further development of these swimmers” said SLASA’s President Lance Arnold.

The bar for swimming in Saint Lucia will continuously be raised as swimming takes bigger steps towards Common Wealth Youth Games 2017.
