A 10-member national under-16 team is representing Saint Lucia during this weekend’s hosting of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Girls Youth Championships at the YMCA Sports Complex indoor volleyball court in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.
Dominated by girls from St Joseph’s Convent, who ended second in the Under-20 inter-school tournament some six weeks ago, the team will meet squads from the host nation, St Eustatius, and French St Martin in a four-team round-robin format.
The winning team from this weekend’s competition will advance to the North and Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) round of play.
Saint Lucia’s team, which is coached by recent former volleyball international, Samantha Mann-Reid, has seven Convent girls. They include twins Kaityln and Kait Gaillard, a setter and a power hitter, respectively; 12-year-old libero Zarriane Anthony; off power hitters Matilda Angeloni and Tiah Arnold; and middles Chenoa Evans and Aryel Leonard.
From Leon Hess Comprehensive hails middle Tenay Joseph. Nasha Akyera Frederick, the oldest girl on the team, is from Corinth Secondary. And Zadie St Louis, who is also a talented runner, is from Vieux Fort Comprehensive.
The team is set to return home on Monday.
