PRESS RELEASE – St. Lucia is one of four English speaking Caribbean countries participating at the Second CAC games qualifying boxing championships being held in Bogota Colombia starting this afternoon.
Qualifying for the CAC Games Boxing event is being held for the first time this year and the 2014 CAC Games are scheduled to be held in Veracruz Mexico in November.
Representing St. Lucia in Bogota at the championships are 56 kg Bantamweight Travis Maynard, 64 kg Light welterweight Dalton “the Hurricane” George who is making a return to the sport after a lay off for a while and 75 kg Middleweight Miguel Auguste. The team has Conrad Fredericks as Coach and Second Vice president and PRO of the St. Lucia Boxing Association Brian Mc Donald as team manager.
All the boxers who are in Colombia were silver medallist at the recent Creole Boxing championships which were held in Guadeloupe. 69 spots are available from this qualifier for the CAC games in Veracruz Mexico.
Speaking ahead of the team’s departure for the qualifiers in Colombia team Manager Brian Mc Donald said he was confident the team will do well in Colombia after putting in extensive preparations over the last two months for the creole games and the qualifiers in Colombia.
He said he was confident that if not all but at least one or two of the three boxers will make the cut and qualify for the CAC games in Veracruz in Mexico in November.
The other English speaking Caribbean countries in Colombia for the qualifiers are Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and the USVI. The other countries taking part are Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Haiti, Cuba,Honduras, Venezuela, Nicaragua,Puerto Rico, Guatemala,The Dominican Republic and of course the hosts Colombia.
The official weigh inn will take place this morning at 7.00 a.m. Colombia Time which is 8.00 a.m. Eastern Caribbean Time, the Tournament draw from 11.00 a.m. 12 noon our time the championships begin from 2.30 p.m. that’s 3.30 p.m eastern Caribbean time with the official opening ceremony and then preliminary matches.
The Technical meeting for the championship took place last evening and addressing the meeting was Domingo Solano the President of AMBC The Americas Boxing Confederation he indicated in his address that he was quite pleased that so many countries made the effort to attend the qualifiers in Colombia and the many events the AMBC has been staging.
He pledged his support and the governing body of the sport in the Americas region to support the countries who are its members as much as possible as they can.
