St. Lucia Medical and Dental Association holds 11th conference

medical_conferencePRESS RELEASE – The Executive of the St Lucia Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) in collaboration with the University of the West Indies, is currently hosting its 11th Annual Conference this weekend under the Theme “Heads UP”.

According to the President Dr. Stanley Jean, “A key mandate of the SLMDA is to provide opportunities for our members to remain current and on the cutting edge of our profession, through continuing education. Together with our monthly continuing education programme, this annual event is an important forum for us to interact and keep abreast with new developments in the field of Medicine; towards achieving and maintaining an excellent Medical and Dental specialized care delivery system.”

The Conference delegates include Medical practitioners from St Lucia and the region including Barbados, Cuba, India and the USA and Martinique. This Conference has attracted specialists doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, allied health-care professionals, together with the officials of the Ministry of Health, and members of the academic community to refresh and update on new diagnostic and treatment modalities in the various pathologies of the head and neck. The Conference Chairperson is Dr. Takira Glasgow.

The 11th Annual Conference which was declared open by the St Lucia Minister for Health Honourable Alvina Reynolds, last evening, continues Saturday and Sunday in plenary session with specialists presenters examining such issues as Neurology, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dentistry, and a “Heads Up” on the status of Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, by Ministry of Health personnel.

The theme of this year’s conference “Heads Up” is timely in light of the challenges we in Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean face when dealing with Neurological and Neurosurgical conditions, and in particular, head injuries arising from the increasing number of motor vehicular accidents, which result in incapacities, loss of productivity and sometimes, death.

Dr. Stanley-Jean, in her welcome remarks told the audience “ This theme is appropriate too, as we reflect with pride, on the strides made in the medical profession in Saint Lucia, how we have grown, and, can now boast of having a diversity of specialists in most of the specialty areas of medicine and Dentistry”. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sebastien Alcindor a specialist doctor -St Lucian currently based in the United States, Dr. Sean Smith represented the Cave Hill Campus UWI.

The Executive of the St Lucia Medical and Dental Association is very thankful for the support provided GTM, SAGICOR, LIME, C&W Business Solutions, Bay Gardens, Carlisle Labs, the Ministry of Health and Peter and Company and the media who partnered with the Association in making possible the successful hosting of the 11th Conference.
