St. Lucia hosts conference on green economy

Saint Lucia is playing host to the region’s leaders and officials in a weeklong conference examining the green economy as an avenue for sustainable development and poverty eradication.

Such an approach has been recognized by Caribbean countries as a way to address many development challenges, including a decline in key sectors such a tourism and agriculture, and escalating costs in environmental degradation.

Dominican Minister for Environment Dr. Kenneth Darroux, part of the panel of keynote presenters for day one of the conference, expressed the importance of small island states collaborating on policy development for a sustainable future.

Senior Advisor of the Caribbean Green Economy Initiative, Ambassador Edwin Laurent, hopes that the conference can stimulate change, not only in sustainable development area but in all sectors.

The Caribbean Green Economy Conference coincides with World Environment Day 2013, a day to focus efforts at evolving a sustainable future.
