(CNS) – Government is spreading some Christmas cheer in the public service this month.

It announced that after lengthy deliberations Thursday, Cabinet agreed that all civil servants of the federal and Nevis Island Administration, pensioners, government auxiliary employees, Skills Training and Empowerment Programme employees and workers at all statutory corporations would get double their salary in Christmas bonus.

“The bonus payment is indeed expected to bring cheer to all families in St Kitts and Nevis and can be considered as the government’s Christmas gift to our hardworking and deserving citizens,” the Cabinet said in a statement.

Cabinet said it took account of the many challenges still being experienced by several households following Hurricanes Irma and Maria and of the government’s continuing efforts to bring relief to people.

“The fiscal performance of the federal government was also taken into consideration. Up to September of this year, the fiscal accounts reflected a surplus on the recurrent account, the overall account and the primary account. All economic indicators also point to robust growth for 2018. Several capital projects are expected to come on stream and various private developments are anticipated.

“In light of the above, the Cabinet took a decision to approve the payment of a double salary for the second consecutive year,” it said.

Recipients of the extra salary were encouraged to spend their money wisely, with a suggestion that those who still have repairs to make to their homes should take advantage of the duty-free concessions being offered by the government.

  1. Yes eh!
U sound like ur Master calling people Jackass because they have a different view. I hope all is well with u. U see my point is that where as the Caribbean small island states continue to sink in debts it takes really caring leaders to make such a bold move for his people. Others might want to think of debt situations and perhaps service the debts or engage in revenue generating postures. That money given to civil servants will certainly be spent in their country where taxes will be deducted and so on and much will return to the government. I call it a double whammy in that sense because socially the people's needs are being met and the country still gains from the wisdom of its leader

  3. This country never cease to amaze me. A country who defaulted on their debt will more than likely be taking another loan or scrap the last 50 cents from social security coffers to pay double salary. It's the same song and dance each year.

Then you will turn around and wonder why no progress in the OECS

    • I guess you never kept up with financial news out of St. Kitts. the previous administration defaulted on the debt for reason which puzzled most kittitians and Nevisions. We went to the IMF and introduced vat something that Iin many quarters viewed was not needed not when we had some 1.6 billion from the CBI program. Fast forward a new administration took over and in short order paid off the debt that was owed to the IMF thus giving the people a relief, they went as far as to take off vat off of food, medicine and funeral expenses. We were not seriously damage by the hurricanes last year not to say that persons did not suffer from winds that crossed the Islands, the government in light of what happened to neighboring Islands took a decision to drop the cost associated with our CBI program to attract more people into the program monies which went into a fund which is now been used in a program which have seen persons having their entire roofs which were damaged during the hurricanes repaired at no cost to them. Our economy is doing well, and when we have plenty the civil service benefits by getting a double salary, when things are bad they get nothing. Oh did I mentioned that we gave money to all those Islands that sustained damage during the storms, yes we did we even sent man power assist. So sue we are our brothers keeper and we care. Successive Governments here have given double salaries when things are good. Oh yeah and nothing comes out of our Social Security, very shortly we will be introducing universal health care for all Kittitians and Nevisians, it wont be a first in the Caribbean not the OECS for sure but it prove that our Government and People are progressive.
