PRESS RELEASE – Large quantities of unwanted scrap tyres is being generated every year and results in major environmental hazards worldwide.
In Saint Lucia the percentage of scrap tires recycled yearly is incompatible with the accumulation of tyre generated. As a result this has become a serious problem in Saint Lucia.
In an attempt to eliminate the situation the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund (SSDF) held presentations for trades men and staff at the Marigot Primary School on Wednesday July 29th, 2015 on the construction of a retaining wall using recycled tyres. The construction of the system is relatively simple and does not require skilled workers and heavy machinery.
Mr. Joachim Henry had applauded the initiative”Today we are starting with the presentations from the Engineers and there are also workers from this community. They will be taught how to tie the tyres to construct a retaining wall. The French are interested in our approach and our ability to conduct effective community mobilization. During this week we hope to see the construction of a retaining wall”
The presentations were done by French engineers from the Council General of Martinique. In December 2014 officials from the Council General Visited the Saint Lucia Social Development fund(SSDF) and toured the various sites where tire re-enforcements would be useful.
Ms. Kujama is one of the French Engineers who returned to Saint Lucia to help Construct tire walls“I come from General Council. Last year I came here to see the slope and I came here there to build retaining walls in the schools. We came to show them how it is done. Construction of one wall would require 5000 used tyres. We want to build two retaining walls”.
Utilization of scrap tires as reinforcement, especially for slope repairs would be particular useful to countries like Saint Lucia where slope failures (landslides) are common, and scrap tyres are abundant. The application of scrap tyres for reinforcement requires a good understanding of the physical and mechanical strength properties, and durability of the tyre.
The significant advantage of the proposed scrap tyre retaining wall would be the reduced cost of materials and construction cost. Both scrap tyres and backfill soils were recycled material.
