PRESS RELEASE – Minister for Youth Development and Sports Shawn Edward said the reduction in allocation for his ministry will not affect his passion and commitment to the development of Youth and Sports.
According to Edward, “The record of the past year proves this much.”
In 2013/2014 the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports operated with a budget of $12 268, 303.20. The Estimates for 2014/2015 reflects a reduction to $8,148,065
The Capital Expenditure of that ministry will be dedicated towards the establishment of a National Aquatic Center, the lighting of more recreational facilities, the fencing of the La Ressource Playing Field. Under the Youth Development portfolio, $298,000 has been allocated for the Windward Island Games and the continuation of the Neck with International Leadership Development Programme.
Over the last year, a number of playing fields have been rehabilitated and lit and the Schools Sports Programme has been revived. Increased financial and technical support has led to success on the school and national levels.
The minister said he welcomes the challenge to do more with a smaller budget. He called on parliamentarians to partner with the ministry to undertake projects in their respective constituencies. In the past year, the ministry has led projects in Babonneau and Castries East, through joint funding from Constituency Development Fund allocations and his ministry’s allocations.
Recurrent Expenditure for the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports is $5, 193,800, while the Capital Budget is $2, 954, 265.~Hon. Shawn Edward. Debate on Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure 2014/2015.
