Saint Lucia’s two-member team to the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics left the United States on Monday to travel to Beijing, China, for what is expected to be the biggest showcase ever for global track and field, race walking and road running.
Saint Lucia is being represented by high jumpers Levern Spencer and Jeannelle Scheper, aged 31 and 20 (21 in November). Levern is a veteran campaigner, who is to date the only Saint Lucian ever to win medals at the world level.
In 2015, both ladies have made their share of history. Jeannelle became the first athlete ever from Saint Lucia to win an NCAA Division 1 title. Levern won the nation’s first-ever Pan American Games gold, then repeated as NACAC champion.
They are entered alongside 28 other athletes from 21 countries. Jeannelle’s best height for the year, 1.97m, ranks her sixth. Levern’s best, 1.94, puts her joint 13th. Both will be entered in the qualifying rounds on the 27th, in hopes of making it to the finals on the 29th.
According to a release from the Saint Lucia Athletics Association (SLAA), the organisation “wishes it’s [sic] delegation travelling to the IAAF 2015 World Championships in China all the best.”
Already confirmed to have travelled to China is Team Leader Henry Bailey, who left Saint Lucia last Friday to attend the IAAF Congress and Elections and the subsequent Championships. According to unconfirmed reports, SLAA president Wayne Burton is also headed to Beijing.
