Along with other Regional and International chapters, Spartan AMSA chapter aims to renew and consolidate ties between society and the medical community at large. This organisation facilitates the promotion of active improvement of medical education as well as commitment to the betterment of healthcare delivery.
On a trimestral basis, AMSA continues to conduct many community based activities namely; blood pressure and glucose screening, Basic Life Support (BLS) training for Spartan students, health seminars and school visits. We also organize health walks and on campus trimestral blood drive. AMSA had the opportunity to work in conjunction with numerous well-known organisations on the island such as: St. Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association and Super J, to name but a few. This is one of the many ways in which we get to give back to society and show goodwill towards humanity.
On Friday 22nd January, 2016 was our recent blood drive where, in collaboration with St. Jude Hospital Blood Bank, AMSA witnessed a substantial turnout of students, staff and faculty in great numbers exceeding both expectations and resources.
In the year 2015 to 2016 there were three (3) visits by the Blood Bank to the University and a total of thirty five (35) units of blood were collected. Be a Hero!!!! One (1) Donation can save up to three (3) lives!!! That was the message conveyed by the American Medical Student’s Association AMSA to prospective students willing to donate blood to the “Drops Of Hope” Blood Drive.
In conclusion, Dr. Boopathi Subramaniam Director of Student Affairs continues to encourage health organizations, private business places and schools to collaborate with the Spartan AMSA chapter as we continue to serve our country St. Lucia. AMSA’s aim is to give back to society and also to target physicians in training to better their service to all.
