SLP squashes UWP rumours about VAT

VAT

PRESS RELEASE – Rumours that the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) will increase VAT to 17 per cent if re-elected are an absolute fabrication from the United Workers Party (UWP), designed solely to paint the SLP in a negative light. As a responsible party in Government, it is only right that we squash this untruth now.

This scaremongering by the UWP is not unexpected and typical of a party which is bereft of ideas and solutions. Pushing deliberately misleading information into the public domain is both underhand and irresponsible campaigning. Clearly the UWP is trying to distract from their complete lack of a sound economic policy.

Allen Chastanet has still not explained how he intends to replace VAT despite repeated calls to do so. We can only assume that this is because he does not have an answer to this very straight forward question.

In fact, Mr. Chastanet, despite his public pronouncements, just last week at a private indoor meeting Chastanet pronounced VAT as the best possible tax.

This is yet more evidence that Chastanet’s irresponsible approach to our tax system will put our nation’s economic recovery at risk. The people of St Lucia deserve better – they deserve a stable economic future with opportunities for the many not the few.

The Labour Party is with you, for you, for St Lucia.

  1. A sales tax is less burdensome on both businesses and the poor to administer.
Many ordinary citizens do not understand how the VAT can cripple a small business especially one who sells on credit.
Most hotels in fact most wholesale purchasers buy everything on credit.
Whenbypu sell $100,000 worth of goods on credit to say Sandals they normally take 60 to 90,days to pay but VAT office expects you to pay within 30 and they penalize you 10% if you don't. Their officers don't understand how business works so they simply say "get an overdraft"
They have no clue that you already have one that is working hard already due to the fact that when you imported the goods you already had to pay VAT to their sister Customs and excise dept. Another set if block heads.
So cash flow is removed from your business that you know not when it will return becuz government does not pay refunds.
Now you are suffering from low cash flow and have to struggle to survive as a small business.
There are other ways to replace VAT.
The damn CIP will rake in the dough and PAYE is there. You increased licences increase house tax increase water increase ......give us a break

  2. SLP has become pretty reactionary since the announcement of the date of elections. UWP presented 5 to stay alive and suddenly there's a 15 point plan that's supposed to be 3 times as strong. The SLP then goes on to attempt to state that their plans had already addressed most of the 5 to stay alive. Suddenly there is a plan to address school feeding, transportation subsidies, and house tax relief? Wait was Kenny not aware that Tony was going to call elections on the 6th? kenny and Tony need to discuss things to make sure they are on the same page.

    • If you think Kenny is draining you, wait till Chastanet gets a hold of you... he will suck your blood dry.
