The Soufriere Constituency Group of the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has said it is displeased with behavior allegedly displayed by United Workers Party (UWP) leader Allen Chastanet and his supporters at a ceremony to mark the official opening of the Soufriere Bridge on Friday.
According to the group, in a press release, Chastanet and his supporters surrounded the function bearing placards in apparent disapproval of the ceremony – an action the group believes was a “clearly demonstrated attempt to disrupt and sabotage a legitimate government function.”
“Chastanet pretends not to know much of what was happening on the Friday. This is yet another attempt by Mr. Chastanet to mislead the public. This was a well-publicized event and the whole of Soufriere knew. He is in Soufriere regularly and could not have been unaware of the event. The placards carried by his supporters were a clear indication that they came with a plan to cause disturbance,” the press release stated.
“The Constituency Group considers Chastanet’s behaviour to be well below the standard expected of a person desirous of representing Soufriere or for that matter, assuming the position of prime minister of the country,” the group said.
The group further rubbished suggestions that the individual chosen to declare the bridge open had no right to do so.
“We note that it is normal practice that even if a project was started by a previous government, it is incumbent on the government of the day to officially declare open the facility. So, for Allen Chastanet to declare that Mr. Dalson has no right to officially declare the bridge open is outright stupid, ridiculous and nonsensical,” the group said.
“In case the nation does not know, Mr. Chastanet and his cronies have always pledged to demonstrate and disrupt the proceedings whenever the bridge was to be declared open,” the group said.
The group further opined that Chastanet’s alleged behaviour was “consistent with his attempts to mislead the OECS Court of Appeal leading to the court’s ruling which basically states that he is incompatible with the truth.”
“It is also now well known that Allen Chastanet claimed that friends of Soufriere paid for his Third World Launch, when we have evidence that the cheque was paid by the Soufriere Town Council,” the group said in the release.
Adding further that, “The constituency council of Soufriere applauds Dalson who is now in the process of building four bridges; two have already been completed for the people of Soufriere – an achievement no other representative has ever accomplished in Soufriere.”
