The Silent March and Mini Rally tomorrow in memory of Chakadan Daniel presents an opportunity for Saint Lucians to make a strong and collective statement against the upkeep and management of human rights in our nation.
Our nation has historically fallen short of acceptable international standards with respect to the ideal of ‘human’ as set by the Declaration of Human Rights first adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948.
Among the tenets of this declaration which serves as a universal standard (ref. Articles 5 and 6 respectively) are the right to life, liberty and security; the right to be free from torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Our nation which falls within the category of a democracy faces the growing challenge of demonstrating such values with respect to the upkeep of human rights.
Saint Lucians from all walks of life are called upon to express their concern for the preservation of human rights by attending and participating in the march.
The march will be in the village of Micoud. The event begins at 3:00 pm from the Micoud Playing Field and will follow a designated route through the streets of the village and back to the playing field for a mini rally.
