Shop steward attends summer school programme in US

Andre Edward, shop steward at the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA), a branch of the National Workers Union (NWU), will leave the island later this month for Washington DC, USA.

While in the USA, Edward will join trade union activists in a week-long Young Workers Summer School Programme.

The trade union forum, which will attract participants from many western countries, is sponsored by the International Transport Federation (ITF) to which the NWU is affiliated.

Among the topics to be discussed will be:

*The importance of modernising the trade union movement.
* Strengthening young workers participation in the trade union movement.
* Political, economic and environmental crisis austerity and its effects.

Edward will also get an opportunity to visit the International Association of Machinists during an organized field trip.

  1. Good idea to groom some of the younger unionists for higher positions of authority later. But hopefully they'll learn how to work better with Management at the various companies. The present method of attacking Management is only driving companies away.
