PRESS RELEASE – Global research has placed road crashes as the number one risk to tourists.
In its report on International Travel, the World Health Organisation (WHO) concluded that road collisions were the most frequent cause of death among travelers.
Some 85% of these accidents take place in developing countries like Saint Lucia.
The annual economic cost to developing countries in lost productivity alone is $65 – $100 billion, roughly the same as the amount they receive in foreign aid.
It is projected that the problem is likely to become much worse, and it against this background Sandals is seeking to increase the competency levels of its fleet drivers by affording them the opportunity to participate in a defensive driving course.
The Defensive Driving and Golf Cart safety training was conducted over a two day period on September 30th 2014 and October 2nd 2014 respectively.
On completion of day one, the drivers were the recipients of a certificate and a card from the National Safety Council (NSC).
The certificates were presented to them by the President of the International Safety Council, Roger Marks.
During the training, participants were exposed to; practical knowledge and techniques to avoid collisions and violations; sensible advice for choosing safe and responsible driving behaviors and habits; the importance of occupant safety devices and how to use them correctly; guidance for dealing with difficult driving conditions, distractions and fatigue.
Knowledge was imparted by the Mr. Eric Kipps, a safety professional with nineteen (19) years of industry experience. Mr. Kipps and has been involved at all levels of safety management and training among other accolades.
Sandals is the first company in St Lucia to offer international defensive training exposure to its employees which underscores the continued commitment of the organization on employee development.
Environmental Health & Safety Manager of Sandals Regency indicated that; “Fleet driver training is an important part of Fleet Management.
It is critical that drivers are competent to carry out their task in a responsible manner. In light of the fact that tourism is our main stay, guests’ safety is paramount to us.
As a Socially responsible corporate citizen, we are also concerned that our drivers interaction with the wider community is also done with due care.
