Sammy to captain Toronto Nationals in Global T20

(SNO) – Former West Indies T20 captain Daren Sammy will be reunited with former West Indies coach Phil Simmons when the the inaugural Global T20 Canada kicks off in Toronto from June 28 to July 15.

The two will spearhead a powerful Toronto Nationals unit, which will include Australia’s Steve Smith, West Indies allrounder Keiron Pollard, Saint Lucia and West Indies batsman Johnson Charles, and a strong contingent of Pakistani players such as wicketkeeper / batsman Kamran Akmal, young allrounder Hussain Talat, and left-arm fast medium bowler Rumman Raees.

Off spinner Nikhil Dutta was the top-rated Canadian player selected in Sunday’s first Global T20 Canada Players Draft. Dutta, a member of Canada’s men’s national team, was selected in the seventh round for a $25,000 salary, confirming the 23-year old’s reputation as Canada’s top player.

The Nationals will play against the Vancouver Knights, Edmonton Royals, Montreal Tigers, Winnipeg Hawks and a West Indies team. The Knights boast the talents of Chris Gayle, Lasith Malinga is set to join the Tigers, Shahid Afridi will helm the Royals, and Dwayne Bravo will lead the Hawks.

Overall, 80 players were chosen over 16 rounds by the five Canadian franchise teams. They hail from 19 different countries and were selected from a pool of over 1,500 cricketers that registered from 40-plus countries around the world. The West Indies Team will consist of Caribbean players selected by Cricket West Indies.
