(PRESS RELEASE) — Two girls, Belle Faucher and Courtney Samuel, were the island’s 2019 New Year’s Day babies.

Belle was delivered at Victoria Hospital, while Courtney was delivered at St. Jude Hospital. Each family has been given a hamper containing baby supplies.

The gesture was the idea of the eldest of the Peter sisters of Castries, Agnes Peter-Popo, who resides in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

Born into a family of seven girls and one boy, it was indeed a pleasure for Mrs. Popo to be present to deliver the hampers to the baby girls, having been surrounded by mostly girls for most of her younger days growing up in Saint Lucia. A mother of two adult sons and four grandsons, Mrs. Popo said she was very fond of children in particular, and wanted to usher in the New Year by reaching out to the two families.

“I have been residing in the USVI for over 30 years and would usually return to visit my family back in Saint Lucia. As a community person at heart, it is not the first time that I have been associated with such benevolent gestures, although this latest one is the first of its kind for me. It just a pleasure just looking at them and thinking of the bright future ahead for our kids, if somebody, somewhere, just took the time to show some love,” she added.

According to Mrs. Popo, the family intends to make this an annual gesture.
