Tuesday, June 26, 2012 – The Government of Saint Lucia has praised the National Culinary Team (SLUCT) for its sterling performance at the just concluded Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Taste of the Caribbean Culinary Competition in Miami.
The team won a total of eight medals and two awards, placing third in the overall competition.
Claded in official wear the team returned home Monday evening at the George FL Charles Airport.
Speaking at a brief welcome ceremony Tourism Minister Honourable Lorne Theophillus commended the team for its performance which he says brings great joy to the country at this time.
“I am extremely proud not just to represent the government of Saint Lucia but also all our citizens to welcome our Ambassadors back home. The members of the Culinary team are Ambassadors because you have done what many attempt to do and will continue attempting to do,. You have represented Saint Lucia with distinction and we are proud of you and your achievements but at the same time we encourage you to continue to aspire to attain higher standards, continue to hone in on your craft so you can continue to develop and contribute to the tourism sector because you are a vital component in the development of this sector”.
Team Saint Lucia which included seven chefs and one bartender all of whom were first time participants, won recognition in every category in which Saint Lucia was represented.
First Vice President of the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association Daniel Belizaire explained that the team`s performance is indicative of the high standard of the island`s tourism industry.
“When we think of how important food is to the advancement of our vital tourism industry, we will all agree that this achievement is not without significance. Without good food, our burgeoning tourism industry would not be able to meet the ever- demanding expectations of visitors to our shores. Without food, our destination would be less attractive, as there would be that missing ingredient to complete a true Saint Lucian vacation experience and flavour. The SLHTA and the SLUCT would like to thank all our sponsors, family, colleagues and the general public for their supported efforts and the motivation received in order for the team to represent Saint Lucia and themselves in the most exceptional manner”.
