Saint Lucians from all walks of life are invited to rally with the family of Chakadan Daniel today and tomorrow.
Daniel met his untimely death on October 22 or 23 in questionable circumstances in prison. The case has since sparked sustained interest among St. Lucians and within the local, regional and international media.
The family said there are “troubling” and “unresolved” questions and concerns including the absence of conclusive evidence to confirm that Daniel committed suicide by hanging himself; failure of the police to produce the material(s) used in the “hanging” in support of their claim; absence of any role by the coroner as required by law; no evidence or statement from authorities that the crime scene has been preserved; no clear statement from the relevant authorities that the police officer(s) implicated have been transferred or sent on leave; and failure on the part of the Minister of Home Affairs and National Security to issue clear directives to the police.
The planning and organising committee for a march, funeral and burial arrangements for Daniel is calling on all concerned Saint Lucians to demonstrate these concerns by showing up in massive numbers to send a strong statement to authorities.
