Tuesday, December 04, 2012 – In observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2012, President of the Saint Lucia National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities, Krishna Satney shared her thoughts on the theme, “Removing Barriers to Create an Inclusive and Accessible Society for All.”
This year’s theme is aimed at promoting accessibility for persons with disability and eliminating barriers in all aspects of society.
Proclaiming this observance on December 3, Satney encourages Saint Lucians to collaborate in addressing the many existing issues of equal access to society and services including education, employment, healthcare, transportation and justice.
“The observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities provides an opportunity for Saint Lucia to make a national commitment, not only by ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that recognizes accessibility and inclusion as fundamental rights but, particularly to enact the proposed National Policy for Persons with Disabilities. This will significantly enhance the status of persons with disabilities and eliminate the peripheral treatment of disability issues despite our resource constrained environment.”
The National Council is calling on the Saint Lucian community to focus its attention on the fact that persons with disabilities should be provided with equal opportunities to benefit and contribute to society so as to achieve progress and development.
