(SNO) – People from neighbouring islands, particularly Saint Lucians, are being blamed for the recent spate of robberies with violence and robberies under the threat of firearms in Martinique, according to reports.

In one of the most prominent incidents, a 19-year-old was shot to death on July 7, 2018 when he refused to surrender his motorcycle to two individuals who are believed to be foreigners.

According to media reports, his death shocked Martinique which has seen an increase in the reports of violent robberies and robberies under the threat of firearms in recent weeks.

Some eyewitnesses have told the media that the crimes have been committed by people from neighbouring islands including Saint Lucia.

A source told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that “a lot of Saint Lucians” are coming to Martinique and stealing motorcycles.

The source said at least one person has died as a result of these robberies.

“Yesterday again they stole another motorcycle. Last week they saw some Saint Lucian putting a motorcycle called a stunt into a boat. The French people are getting very upset now,” the source said.

  2. Smh, those French islands not easy. They say the same thing about people from Dominica living in Guadeloupe. But when you do check it's not Lucians, Dominicans, or Haitians; its French people committing the vast majority of the crimes.

  3. I marvel at the inconsistency and leniency given to thieving from shops. Shop keepers are blamed for not making it harder for thieves to steal their goods. They are even seen as cheapskates for not employing security guards to protect their goods. Individuals practice abroad habits they get away with in their home countries. The general attitude is “I will only do right by you only if you can stop me by whatever means necessary”. Such attitudes are nurtured at home. If St Lucians want to establish positive reputation both abroad and at home, then start in the home. Parents must practice ethical behaviours themselves and not leave it to churches or schools for other people to instil qualities that are woefully lacking in them.

  5. This "article" contains alot of "allegeds" not condoning the act of theft but Martiniquans lets be real...martiniquans are notorious for theft and dishonest in hotel rooms when.vacationing in st lucia. From the irons, coffee machines, hair dryers, cutlery bed linens, towels..if it can fit in their luggage best believe they will take it. Why do you think in martiniquan hotels everything is either chained down or connected to a wall. The french people are getting very upset now...St Lucians have long been upset

  7. Please stop ruining it for other decent St . Lucian. Even the way that St Lucian react on the boats or at customs disgust me. The rush, the impatience, the cussing and pushing. It is as if we have absolutely no manners. I have been to other islands , taking ferries to neighboring islands and people line up decently and do what they are told to by the customs officers; total respect for the authority. Let us boost or moral and show the neighboring island we are not desperate or thirsty for what they have. Where is our pride and dignity.

  8. Requesting the police department to check the bike papers(Documents) in several signals . If the owner of the bike and the driver is different need to ask the drive to call the owner (Conformation). After one month whatever outcome need to release some fake news that . We caught this many bike and the thief. We are going to give a serious punishment to them . Hence at least out of 5 thief 3 will drop their plan on this bike robbery . Save innocent people to live long.

  15. Why cant Martinique embrace and open boarder policy like France has done? All diversity should be welcomed. 🙂

  16. Customs and the police need to toughen up when it comes to those so called badboys who always want to have things and don't want to work hard to buy it or save their monies to get what they want. All them men want to do is rob and steal and the killings come along with it. Once those guys have motorcycles coming in and riding on our streets we have to hold them up immediately and make sure they produce the correct papers for these bikes. And also figure out if it has been stolen from Martinique and if there were murders attached to it. Because I see a number of these criminals with these new bikes riding up and down without helmets and precaution to anyone else on the road and none of the authorities stop them to find out if they are legal entry bikes or illegal. It's as if those criminals come here and run this country how they feel like because we are afraid to handle them or even enforce the laws of the country. it's just a matter of time before they run our country to the ground with their lawless actions. These guys don't feel no way for people to know they are thieves and have stolen goods in their possession. It's like it's a thrill or something of fame and pride for them.

    • The problem in this country is enforcement. The police are too lazy to do their jobs they are getting paid for. Perfect example is carnival day. With all the talk of fines and arrests how many were held? None. I saw the band security trying to do his job. A group of vieux neg invade the band and gang up on him. The SSU finally came. All they did. Search one of their pouches and let them go. And this is a notorious bunch of hoodlums who had no arm bands and were causing problems for revellers. If the police had simple done their job, that would've been four less hoodlums disturbing carnival. Now imagine how many times a day these things happen and how many offenses go unpunished.

The RSLPF and the judiciary are the problems.

      (34)(4)
      • If like you say the RSLPF and the judiciary are the problem, then what is the PM Chastanet going to do about it! A lot of people will say 'people always quick to blame the PM and the government' but if nothing is being done well then they are to blame.
