(SLTA SCOOP) — The Saint Lucia Tourism Authority (SLTA) has welcomed East London Jazz musician, Poppy Ajudha to the island.
The young artist has recently won recognition for being featured in former US President, Barack Obama’s list of favourite songs for 2018. Her duo track with Tom Misch, ‘Disco Yes’ has reached over 53 million Facebook fans and 20 million Instagram followers on the former president’s social media pages.
Poopy is no stranger to Saint Lucia where she vacationed frequently as a child. Her father is Saint Lucian and her mother, British.
The SLTA is collaborating with Poppy on her most recent visit to the island, presenting her to Saint Lucia through media and other social engagements.
At a press conference convened by the SLTA on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, Senior Marketing Manager at the SLTA, Ms. Jackie Mathurin said: “It really has been fantastic to have that buzz around someone who is Saint Lucian – even more to discover her and her music and the expression that she brings.”
Addressing the local media, Poppy expressed a desire to take on projects involving the island’s youth stating, “I’d love to work with young people, especially young women, instilling confidence and creating a feeling of ambition further than the Island.”
Resident British High Commissioner to Saint Lucia, Stephen McCready was also present to welcome Poppy. His office is actively working to promote opportunities for greater links between Saint Lucia and the UK.
“With Poppy here today it is a really good and strong link. She is an upcoming artist and it is a real privilege to see great links between the UK and Saint Lucia,” McCready said.
In order to connect Poppy with more audiences, the SLTA is coordinating her journey as she performs at the Bay Gardens Beach Resort’s weekly Managers Cocktail Reception on Wednesday, January 9 and on Friday, January 11 at Stonefield Resort in Soufriere.
