The Saint Lucia senior male rugby team continued its unbeaten run in 15’s rugby, getting the best of US Robert of Martinique 24-5 on Saturday at the Corinth Playing Field.
US Robert is one of the top clubs in Martinique. It was the first time that the team had visited Saint Lucia but the home team was not gracious to the visiting French club.
Lenford Eugene opened the scoring for the home team in the ninth minute of play with a try converted by Garner Felician to make the score 7-0.
Two more tries were scored in the half by Jerry Charles and Fabian ‘Oscar’ Gabriel. Felician converted one of the two, and at halftime, Saint Lucia led 19 to nothing.
The French club team finally got on the scoreboard six minutes into the second period to close the gap to 19-5, but Eugene scored his second try in the final minute of the game to secure the win for Saint Lucia.
This followed wins against Martinique club Diamante and the St Vincent & the Grenadines national team at home in June, and the British Virgin Islands in Tortola in May in the North American and Caribbean (NACRA) qualifiers.
Both the Saint Lucia male and female teams continue to train for the prestigious NACRA 7’s tournament to be held in Mexico two months hence.
