The Saint Lucia Cycling Association has selected a team of five cyclists to participate in the 2015 Caribbean Junior Championships, scheduled for this coming weekend in the Dominican Republic.
In the junior division, 17 to 18 years old, the team comprises Dave Charlery, 2014 Junior Cyclist of the Year; Andrew Norbert, winner of last month’s 68km road race; and Romueous Noel, 2015 National Junior Champion.
Kluivert Mitchel, who is unbeaten locally in his age group for 2015, will be joined by Jessie Mentor in the juvenile division.
Cyril Mangal is the team manager, and the quintet is set to travel through Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.
According to Mangal, the team and the Cycling Association are still trying to come up with funds to assist with paying excess baggage fees for their equipment. The Association has been supported by a number of entities, including the Saint Lucia National Lotteries, Saint Lucia Olympic Committee and former cyclist, Claude Chase.
“The excess baggage fees for five bikes will cost about just over $4,000. We are appealing for some assistance with the charges. We have applied to the airlines for an exemption, but that has not come through yet, so we are trying to be as prepared as possible.”
So far 11 countries including the host nation, Dominican Republic, have confirmed their participation in the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships. Aside from Saint Lucia, the other participating teams are Jamaica, Barbados, French St Martin, Dutch St Maarten, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Anguilla, Curacao and Aruba.
