Saint Lucia was represented this week at the 2016 Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) General Assembly, in the Qatari capital city of Doha.
Over 1000 personalities from 206 National Olympic Committees and International Sport Federations took part in the two-day meeting, including president of the Saint Lucia Olympic Committee, Inc (SLOC), Fortuna Belrose, and general secretary, Alfred Emmanuel. Richard Peterkin was also in Qatar, in his capacity as an International Olympic Committee member and Chairman of the Finance Commission.
The 21st ANOC General Assembly incorporated the 2016 ANOC Awards Ceremony, including awards for Best Male and Female of Rio 2016, Best Male Team and Female Team, Best National Olympic Committee, Most Inspirational Performance, Inspiring Hope Through Sport, Outstanding Contribution to the Olympic Movement, and Outstanding Lifetime Achievement.
ANOC is the umbrella organization responsible for protecting and advancing the interests of the world’s National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and for supporting their mission to promote the Olympic Values worldwide. Over the last 35 years, the number of NOCs recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and represented by ANOC has risen to 206.
Meanwhile, with little to no fanfare, the SLOC held its annual general meeting on 3 November, and engaged female athletes at a Women’s Commission Luncheon, during the course of which start high jumper Levern Spencer was honoured. The SLOC also held an event for World Walking Day, which passed with no great incident.
