Saint Lucia, other eastern Caribbean countries urged to repeal buggery laws

(CMC) — St Lucia and other countries in the eastern Caribbean have been urged by Human Rights Watch (HRW) to repeal colonial buggery laws.

“The laws have broad latitude, are vaguely worded, and serve to legitimise discrimination and hostility towards LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) people in the Eastern Caribbean,’ the organisation said.

According to HRW, the laws give social and legal sanction for discrimination, violence, stigma, and prejudice against LGBT individuals, by singling out those groups in a discriminatory manner.

HRW disclosed that upon interviewing various citizens of the Eastern Caribbean countries, it was discovered that members of the LGBT community fear coming out to their families or communities, due to experiences of already being ostracised for their identity.

HRW also asserted that members of the community have experienced homelessness due to lack of financial support, making them increasingly vulnerable to an array of abuses.

It declared that discriminatory laws prevent members of the LGBT community from reporting on these issues, where they have experienced lack of protection and empathy from the police.

The organisation urged Eastern Caribbean countries to repeal all laws that criminalise consensual activity among same-sex couples, pass laws defining rape in gender-neutral ways, and conduct awareness raising campaigns for the LGBT community.

  1. The gay lobby is hard at work. Tell them that white supremacy is rampant in other countries and HRI has not issued any statement. We have our laws and they have theirs: which is more significant giving people rights to own weapons of war or same sex which has the effect of indirect genocide (the killing of your population by suppressing its growth)?

Think about that "gay lobby," your population is in the millions, we have yet to record 200,000 with a shrinking youth population. So what are you telling us, continue the shrinkage by advertising to our young that being gay is acceptable? So who is gonna foot the NIC bill of our aging population? Was China's one child policy discriminatory? Well our policy is to increase our population and we see the gay movement as a hindrance to our progress. Gays don't get killed or discriminated against here. Instead the government takes taxpayers money to send them on conferences around the world while their activity is still illegal on our books. So mind your damn business.

  2. Even if we were to consider amending our laws, LGBT is certainly not priority. We have more pressing matters to deal with. We are hungry, but not dying of hunger. They want to come here in boat loads to practice their abnormal behavior openly. We must protect the vulnerable, including our children. Let's take it to the polls if need be.

  5. Our Islands are already infiltrated by Leftists and now the Western-styled Liberals are making small inroads into our society and beginning with our children in the schools and tv they hope to create a future generation of thin skinned complainers. Let the legislators corrupt their own kin not ours.

  6. This is so disgusting, please leave the laws as is, amongst all the humans rights issues we have , that's what this So called HRW group sees fitting to remove, so that there animals can go do nastiness in public, I hope the governments don't entertain this,

  7. I expect more from HRW! LGBT is an exclusive club that represents a small percentage of the population. Please be inclusive of people who face hostility and discrimination - LGBTQQIP2SAA - lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual, 2-spirited, asexual, and allies that represents 99% of the population. After the buggery laws are removed the marriage laws followed by the age of consent and incest laws and should be changed as well so that people could be free to do what they want. I myself is questioning and still exploring to find out my sexuality.

    • Still exploring your sexuality!? you don't know? I am Heterosexual, when I walk down the street, no one knows that I prefer women. I don't broadcast it or want to broadcast it to the world. WHY do you and others like you NEED to push what you are doing in my face? I don't like it. I don't threaten you but you want to change the law to threaten me for disagreeing with you. You make your choices, I make mine, don't brainwash me or MY children. leave it at that

  9. Sodomites international are very vigilant in trying to find a way to circumvent
our Laws so they can be free to carry out their acts of sodomy in our Judeo-Christian
Society freely as they would wish; I don't think anyone in St.Lucia can say that they
are being harassed, persecuted or being discriminated against because they are Gay.
Gosh, they've always been around, we joked about it in small talk, but harass? no.
Leave the Laws as it is, it is to protect the infants, the very young and the innocent
from the influence of rabid and unhealthy Bullers and to protect against prostitution.
