Below is a statement from the acting PM on Mandela’s passing.
We the Government and People of Saint Lucia convey our deepest condolences to the family of His Excellency Nelson Mandela and the Government and People of South Africa, on the passing of Mr. Mandela.
The world has lost an icon whose extraordinary achievements under an arduous set of circumstances showed the triumph of the human spirit. He was not only a national stalwart but a world renowned exemplar of courage and resilience. His strength in the face of adversity will continue to inspire generations to come. Mr. Mandela fought for justice and equality in a country once marred by political upheavals and systemic racial discrimination and his vision for a free South Africa in now reality.
Saint Lucia had the privilege of hosting Mr. Mandela when he attended the Heads of Government Meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in 1998. His profound sense of compassion, generosity and forgiveness was a shining example for all those with whom he met.
During this time of bereavement, our nation’s thoughts and prayers are with the Government and People of South Africa.
