Defending champions and host nation Saint Lucia were beaten for the first time in the 2015 WINLOTT Under-15 cricket tournament on Tuesday, losing to Grenada by three wickets at the Gros Islet playing field.
It is also Saint Lucica’s first loss in 10 games.
Batting first, Saint Lucia got to 224-9, just managing to bat out their 50 overs.
Captain Kimani Melius was out cheaply, having made just two runs. Dhan-Raj ‘Chaz’ Cepal and Jonathan Khodra put on a good partnership, adding 45 runs.
Rene Montoute made 32, and with the team in trouble at 128-5, Lee Solomon came in to compile 19 before being run out. Simeon Gerson added a stroke-filled 27, and extras came to a startling 82.
Grenada started their innings in much the same vein as the reigning champions, losing wickets with 17, 67 and 73 on the tins. But Corie Simon (51) and Shakim Edwards (50) would prove Saint Lucia’s undoing, combining for an 87-run partnership that laid the foundation for the total of 226-7. Saint Lucia would have been heartened to see Gerson, Montoute and Cepal striking with the target still some way off, but it was too little, and too late.
Montoute and Cepal took four wickets between them, giving up 87 runs from their 19 overs. Solomon came in for special treatment, conceding 23 runs from just four overs. Shelton St Rose was taken for 29 from his six overs, and 25 came off Keygan Arnold’s seven overs.
Extras came to 41.
