A “confident, determined and fighting” Saint Lucia team pulled out all the stops to beat Dominica 25-18 on Sunday evening, the second day of the Caribbean Netball Association’s Jean Pierre Under 16 Netball Championship.
Playing at the Vigie Sports Complex in Castries, the home team led at the end of every quarter against the spirited and athletic Dominicans. Saint Lucia were up 12-9 at halftime and pulled away from there.
Canaries centre Janelle Mathurin and the defensive cohort (led by 12-year-old Megan Nestor, also of Canaries, and captain Bianca Alfred of Babonneau) were outstanding for Saint Lucia. Kamala Mangal from Marc converted 22 of her 27 attempts on goal, whilst Tanny William of Desruisseaux made three fo her five shots.
Goal Attack Kayla Wilson for Dominica made 10 from 17, Celena Langais 4-5, and substitute shoot Shanice Henry 4-10.
According to one observer, “the Dominicans put on a strong fight, but were cleverly outmatched by the Saint Lucians, with skilful, faster down the line passes and ball play and encouraged by a home grown crowd.”
This win, combined with the other results on Sunday, put Saint Lucia in pole position. St Vincent and the Grenadines played their first game and won 22-14 over Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados beat Dominica on the opening night and had Sunday off. Bermuda beat Grenada 27-18.
Monday evening, Saint Lucia plays St Vincent and the Grenadines in a top-of-the-table clash at the Vigie Sports Complex.
